Calgary or a nearby town — where should you buy?

Start with the commute

The fastest way to narrow your search is to decide how far you are willing to travel each day. Living and working inside Calgary gives you the shortest commute and the widest choice of homes. Towns like Airdrie and Cochrane put you 20 to 30 minutes from the city with a smaller-town feel, while Okotoks and Chestermere suit buyers who want more space and a quieter pace.

Try the drive at rush hour before you commit — a town that feels close on a Sunday afternoon can feel very different on a Tuesday morning.

Compare what your budget buys

For the same budget, towns around Calgary often buy more house, a bigger lot or a newer build than an equivalent inner-city community. That said, Calgary offers the deepest selection of established neighbourhoods, mature trees, and older character homes.

Use the filters on our homes page and each town's listings page to compare what's actually available in your price range right now — the counts are live from the MLS® system.

Think about the lifestyle you want

Calgary gives you big-city amenities: major hospitals, post-secondary schools, pro sports, and an international airport. The surrounding towns trade some of that for community events, shorter school runs and easy access to the mountains or the river valley.

Airdrie and Cochrane sit along the main routes north and west of the city, Okotoks and High River serve the south, and Strathmore, Chestermere and Canmore round out the east and mountain options.

Browse the whole region in one place

Our Homes in nearby cities & towns page lists every community we serve, each with its own live listings. Save the homes you like with the heart button, then ask Walter or Harry for honest advice on any area — including recent sold prices the public listings don't show.
